Tabletop Jazz
copyright 1978 by Victor Compton

Well, there's a lady in the corner,
tappin' out the beat on her glass.
She looks a little dreamy;  perhaps a little steamy,
listenin' to that tabletop jazz.  listenin' to that tabletop jazz.

Well, she idly smokes her cigarette
So careless of the burning ash.
She's a little cool and breezy.  To fall in love is easy,
listenin' to that tabletop jazz.  listenin' to that table top jazz.

chorus:   Oh and I..... I love a night on the town
And watchin' all the ladies pass.
When I'm feelin' kind of spacey.....gettin' hot and racey.
               Listenin' to that tabletop jazz.
               Listenin' to that tabletop jazz.

Well she might be a waitress for her pay,
Or a member of the upper class.
But tonight she's tempermental, and very continental,
Listenin' to that tabletop jazz.  Listenin' to that tabletop jazz.

A  word :  When  musicians are practicing/jamming in the afternoon  before the club is open or late at night after the club is closed,  what you see from the stage is a sea of  tabletops, often with chairs turned upsidedown and placed upon them.  It is when the club is empty
that the musicians play only for themselves, their tabletop jazz.
