Salt And Cold Chicken
copyright 1976 by Victor Compton

Salt and cold chicken again today
Outside my window, the miles roll away
Somewhere is someone I must get to see
I feel I should have her and she should have me.

Miles past locations of things that I've done
In moving darkness I wait for the sun
And somewhere are warm days with times I must try
of loving and winning and unending rides.

White snow and diesal, pre-winter dawn
Above the motors, the dreamers fly on
Streams of musicians on highways of life
Wrapped in exhaustion, strangers to light.

Salt and cold chicken again today
Outside my window the miles roll away
Tires in chorus sing druidic songs
Of castles and kingdoms and roads that go on, and on.

A Word: This song was written while driving a band bus down a lonely Kansas highway at four in the morning during a blizzard.
I was eating some cold fried chicken and trying to amuse myself
as the rest of the band slept on the floor, between the instruments.
I would now change" highways of life" to" highways of night" if I wished to perform the song again.
